Trellis News
The newsletter for Garden Designers
I'ld
love to find out what you think of Trellis News, and how it can be changed
to better meet your needs - so much so, that I'm offering a bottle of bubbly
as a prize for one lucky person who sends in a reply to the survey below.
Your
chance to win a bottle of bubbly
To be in with a chance of winning, please take a few minutes to answer the questions below - if you click Reply on the menu at the top of your email inbox, you'll be able to type your replies directly after the questions below. To send it to me when completed, just click Send, and I'll be able to identify who to send the bubbly to by the email address. There is, I'm afraid, just one bottle and the winner's name will be drawn at random from all the completed surveys received. Good luck, and thanks for taking the time to answer the questions.

In reply to Christine Goodman's request for help, Alex Bell replied:
Millstone Landscapes, for whom I work, may well be able to help on the contractor side - we would need to talk in more detail with Christine. Our nos are: 01243 538444 email designs@millstonelandscapes.co.uk or sales@millstonelandscapes.co.uk.
Unfortuntely, Christine has since had to pull out of this year's show at Hampton Court but has been assured she can exhibit again in 2004.

Article
from abroad - The use of trees to reduce violence
I found a fascinating article about this on the Internet by a guy called Adam
Downing who works in the Virginia (USA) Cooperative, and excerpts from this
are below.
"Trees actually can serve to strengthen urban communities and to reduce violence, including domestic violence. Trees are a central component of crime prevention. A few years ago, researchers at the University of Illinois set out to systematically examine the effects of trees on relations among neighbours. The laboratories for their studies were public housing developments in Chicago. They found many signs of stronger communities where trees were present.
In buildings with trees, residents reported better relationships with neighbours, stronger feelings of unity, and that they felt safer than residents of buildings without trees did. The only observable difference between the buildings and residents was trees. The architecture and residents' demographics were very similar.
So why the difference? Trees make outdoor common areas more inviting. As people are more likely to "hang out", they are also more likely to see and interact with their neighbours. As neighbours get to know each other, they become friends and a source of support. Plenty of research documents the fact that strong neighbourhood ties help people be healthier, both physically and mentally. Better overall health results in fewer needs for expensive social services.
Additionally there is less violence in urban public housing with trees. Rather than resorting to physical violence with a spouse or children, residents are more likely to resolve conflict without violence."
